Look at the defensive stats. The Ravens dominate every cateogry.
In points per game, the Ravens led the 2nd place Patriots by a rate of 12.6 per game to 14.8 per game. In yards per game, they led the 2nd place Jaguars 264.1 to 283.6. They led the Bears in INTs 28-24. They led the Titans, Eagles, Packers, and Vikings 6-5 in Defensive TDs. They were 2nd to the Eagles in passes defended 124-111 even though the Eagles scorekeeper is well-known for giving out passes defended when they didn't happen to inflate the stats. They were behind the Chargers 61-60 in sacks, but nobody else even had 50.
Considering that the stats clearly show the Ravens dominance, why do many people still pretend that there is a debate about the best defense in the NFL instead of just admitting the obvious, that the Ravens are the best defense?

I'm convinced. I can hardly wait to see them play against my Saints in the Superbowl. They'll need a lot of defense to contain all that offense.

Because the Ravens defense this year is weaker, not stronger as last year's squad. Free agency hit them hard. I agree that last year they should have been ranked the best but looking ahead:
Adalius Thomas is gone, Ray Lewis is a year older (and he's not improving with age) And the absence of Jamal Lewis may hurt the D, because the've traditionally been able to play a short field with that ball-control offense. Now it's unknown, so the D may get stuck on the field longer.
That said, they still have Reed & McAllister so you have to count them among the leagues top three defensive units, but they aren't a slam-dunk #1. San Diego has a better, younger front seven, but their secondary isn't as good as the Ravens. New England's D looks like monstrous- but the chemistry is a big unknown.

The Raven's defense was good during the season but when push came to shove and playoffs came, they couldn't stop the Colts from moving the ball at will. Samari Rolle is an old Corner who got burned on several big plays. Ed Reed is good and so is Chris McAllister but they are getting older which is going to hurt them as well.

The Ravens defense is the best and has been the best in the league for a very long time. It has been the best mainly because of Ray Lewis, which is why their time is running out. Once Ray leaves, all of that leadership and greatness leaves, and then they will just be an average defense.

The Raven's defense was pretty special last year but I think it is the best nevermore. (sorry about that!)
The secondary is spectactular, no doubt about it. However, as good as it is, Denver's will be better this year.
The linebackers are very good but Lewis is getting old. THe loss of Thomas is going to hurt.
The line is good but nothing really special when compared to the Jaguar, Viking, or Bear lines.
The coaching is league best.
I figure they will be about third in the league behind New England and Jacksonville this year. 4th if Briggs holding out of team workouts hasn't hurt him and Harris's injuries are well healed.

They are the best defense in the league. It's too bad they didn't stay in Cleveland. We'd have a super bowl championship by now.
