Have the rug cleaned. If as you say its an expensive rug have it cleaned by a professional cleaner. The pet urine will damage the fibers if left in the rug. If you must you can clean yourself. Use a steam cleaner you rent. put in 1/2 the amount of cleaner the direction say. If a deodorizer is avail use it, again 1/2 the amount. For every 1 stroke of the cleaner head with spray, go over 3 times with suction only. After cleaning put outside on a sunny day to dry. You may need to turn over to expose both side of the rug to the sun.

Two week is not enough time too get rid of the smell but, if you do some of the things that has been suggested maybe it will work. The other thing you can do is go and buy some of those ashtrays that eliminate the smoke, so your house will not become polluted again. Last but not least, You can aways step out side or smoke in the bathroom to keep the smell out. Enjoy your Mothers' stay.

When I was a kid all my parents used was Lysol. It kills the germs and gets rid of the smell. All Fabreeze does is cover it up, so that is only temporary. We had 2 dogs and our house NEVER smelled like dog. Invest in a Bissel "Little Green Machine" They are about $100 at Walmart and they work great. I have one and use it at my housecleaning jobs.

I personally like fabreeze pet odor eliminator. It works for me, but everyone else (on here) says it doesn't. I have two dogs that are in my bedroom almost all day, and sleep in there at night, and so the smell can be pretty bad. The Fabreeze gets rid of it very well!!

Wish I could help. Personally, I do not allow nor do I want animals in my house. I cannot see buying nice furniture, etc. and having 4-legged pets all over everything. It's bad enough with 2 legged little ones (and some big ones). Not trying to be smart, just my opinion :)

I suggest you get it terminated, that will get rid of any smell on the dog and also kill the germs. As far as the rug is concerned take it to a carpet cleaner.

eughh I've got a dog like that to.
Get a spray bottle and fill it up with 1 part softener 10 parts water, then just spray all over the rug and leave to dry.

ODOBAN. You can buy it at Wal-Mart in the laundry aisle by the Febreeze. It will kill the bacteria whereas the Febreeze will just make it funky. It is cheaper too.

Sprinkle Bicarbonate (baking) soda over it and after half an hour vac it up. It's nutralises odours and will not damage anything.
