Typically, the goal that is desire is fine. Failure generally results from the execution or implementation of the strategy.
If the lesson learned is not in the strategy problems the errors of the past will continue to repeat as the person is likely using the same strategy over and over.

Steven got it right: you learn from your mistakes so you won't repeat them. Depending on the error, the lesson will vary.
You also learn a little more about finitude. Your limits, those of the thing you were working on, whatever. That gives you a sharper idea of things. One way that manifests itself is in learning that not everything is in your control. That's important to know.
A very smart guy pointed out that it's only when things don't go our way that we learn anything. If your project turns out as expected, your expectations are confirmed - but you won't learn anything new. If we took a healthier attitude toward ignorance and error, we'd probably make a lot more progress than is happening now. Committing to the work, but stepping back from it when things go wrong, seems to me a sane position to take up.

Failure teaches us how not to succeed, which is something we may never learn without failing to succeed. On several occasions my father once told me, "Failure's success is, it and of itself, the success of failure."

Failure makes you realize that you're not perfect and that you have to try harder. It's basically a reality check, in my opinion.

Simply put – Everything. It is only until you’re given an opportunity to fail do you ever learn.
