Arthur Ashe comes to mind. He grew up in Richmond, Virginia, where it's fair to say a young black tennis player was not going to be the subject of many favors in the 1950's and 60's. Not only did Ashe overcome them to become a world champion in tennis, not only did he prove to be a civil rights leader and advocate, and not only did he become an author and spokesman, but he did it all with class and dignity.

I was proud to take the picture of his statue on Monument Ave. in Richmond recently.

Michael Jordan:
He was a determined, hardworking, and friendly person who made it all the way to becoming one of the greatest, if not the greatest basketball player of all time from being cut from his high school basketball team, being told he wasn't good enough, and from being an unknown, yet tremendously talented ball player. He went though many obstacles that could have kept him from being the greatest. With a determined heart he did get through it all.

Jon Lester. He had cancer and he battled it and he is now back with the Red Sox and he is pitching again. He won his first start and he is making his 2nd start today.
