We have an older computer with Win98 operating system. The computer runs great and we just got wireless. We want to be able to go wireless with this older computer. We can only find routers that go back to win98 second edition SE. Does anyone know of a router that supports the original win98 and where to purchase one?
Thanks in advance,

Technically almost any wireless router that uses an Ethernet cable will work. You won't get support from any manufacturer for Win98, it's just too old.

The router will work with the older computer if you have a wireless adapter that works. The manufacturer just won't support you technically when you have problems though.

I've checked some of my oldest hardware and none of my really old wireless adapters are compatible with 98. Just 98SE or above.

you would need a copy of windows 98 SE reason is 98 first edition does not have the drivers for usb...

but there is no reason you can't hard cable it (ethernet) to the wireless router, though this then places your network into a bad position, windows 98 is not secure and is wide open to hackers,,

Download linux and install it on the old computer. this will bring that system into todays world of computing, installing linux it will find your wireless card and router and set it up automatically, it will find all your other hardware also,

do some research into linux..... you can do more with linux than you can do with ms windows XP and all the software is free,,, more than you will ever need... never again pay for software...

you can also run linux from the cd and learn to use it, you can even get on the internet running off the cd rom. can't do that with windows

A router is thoroughly device autonomous because it runs standalone. It does not choose drivers to connect. in the journey that your community settings are appropriate it may connect straight away. in case you connect it by potential of cable it may %. up computerized tcp/ip counsel. while you're utilising on the spot you mustn't deploy any application for the router. you need to use the on the spot card's connection application to seek to your router, set the encryption key and connect. lots of the enjoying cards with ninety 8 help do no longer conceal WPA encryption, you're able to be able to ought to apply WEP, a number of them will in basic terms handle sixty 4 bit WEP. The N router is backward nicely suited with B and G on the spot. i do no longer think of any N kind enjoying cards have ninety 8 help, so save on with your G card.

you might need a wireless card too, but there are many 98se disks around, just copy things to a cd, and install 98se, better system too. might add a little ram. you should be able to borrow a 98se disk.
