I work in the semiconductor industry, is it used or is it allowed to
work as a freelance in that situation?

I work in the software business, and there was a huge waiver I had to sign about using their software. Anything that I made while at work is property of the company and cannot be used personally. I bet the company you work for is similar. I'm almost positive that freelance work will be alright, but be very careful about doing work that can be considered something you do or learned while at your salaried position.

You would need to get approval from your employer prior to doing this. I had one employer who was ok with it and another who wasn't. In both cases, I was doing consulting for businesses, and I agreed to not "take" any customers from the company.

The one that said no was concerned that I would end up conducting my personal business on company time (ie answering my cell phone for my customers when I was at the office.) The other concern was that I wouldn't be able to be "on call" as often as I currently was.
