Dip stick test is VERY unreliable. It is always best to send a sample to the lab. This takes 3 days incubation before you can get the results.

Just because you don't have the burning sensation or discharge doesn't necessarily mean that you do not have a UTI. There are so many symptoms yet you don't have to have them all.

Ask yourself these questions;
Does your urine have an odour?
- cloudy?
- traces of blood?
Is it an odd colour compared to usual?
Do you have nausea?
Do you feel lethargic?
Feel urgency to urinate?
Feel like you need to empty bladder but nothing happens?
When passing urine do you have a stinging sensation?

- Any one of these could indicate a UTI.

You said that you have been given antibiotics, is it trimethoprim? (also named as Proloprim, Monotrim and Triprim). I ask because it is fact that this med does not kill all types of bacteria.

So, since taking the antibiotics have your symptoms improved? got worse? stayed the same? If the answer to any of these questions is yes then if you DO have a UTI the bacteria is more than likely resistant to the antibiotic that you are taking!

DIfferent strains of bacteria can cause a UTI. If however an e-coli stain is involved it would not react to all antibiotics. If you do have a uti and symptoms are not improving then there is a chance you have e-coli bacteria which is definately resistant to Trimethoprim.

I am not sure if you are aware but if a UTI is untreated it can cause so much damage - as well as kidney faliure, it can cause DEATH! I am not saying that to scare you but to put it across how improtant it is for you to see a dr.

YOU NEED to send a urine sample to the lab for analysis. If you do have a UTI that is resistant to the antibiotics that you are taking you will need to get a prescription and undertake the new course of medication.

Of course it is also possible that you do not have a UTI. If the test comes back negative then your dr should help get to the bottom of it and diagnose the problem.
Have you checked out cystitis? Almost the same symptoms as UTI?

Symptoms of cystitis include:

pain, burning or stinging sensations when passing urine, needing to urinate frequently and urgently, but only passing small amounts, urine which is dark, cloudy, strong smelling or contains traces of blood, and pain directly above the pubic bone, or in the lower back or abdomen.
All I can really advise here is UTI as that's what I deal with often.

Good luck.

Are you drinking enough?
I ask this because although you do not have infection IF your urine is very concentrated it can cause bladder discomfort. I have experienced this many times.
I have also recently attended a continence study day and they also have confirmed this.
I would suggest increasing your water content.
Not always do urine infections show up on the dip stick test either. MY doc sent a sample of mine away as the dip stick had proved normal. However the urine sample sent away showed e-coli bacteria which was another reason i had bladder discomfort.
So:
Increase your water intake over next 24-48 hours.
If by Monday you are still uncomfortable then go back to GP and ask him to send off a sample of your urine.
Unlikely to be ovarian problem if the pain is in the bladder. However you can get ovulation pains but that does not affect the bladder normally.

Go back to the Dr, and tell him that the antibiotics didn't work and that you're in worse pain than before. And stop drinking coffee. Drink only water and cranberry juice. Azo pills work if you don't like cranberry juice. Trust me I used to drink a lot of dark drinks and had utis all the time. Now I never get em.
