My husband's desktop Dell 4600 PC needs the motherboard replaced in it, is this something we can do ourselves? I had it at a technicians place, but Dell is giving him the "run-a-round" about getting the part for him. So he don't want to fix it now. How can we fix this problem, short of buying a new computer. We really can't afford a new one right now. Would a different brand motherboard work? Can we do the work ourselves? How hard is it? Any and all information would be great appreciated. Thanks and God bless. ♥

For a start, no another brand motherboard will NOT fit into a Dell box, you will need to get a dell motherboard, the way dell make their systems is that you are tied to them for maintenance and parts.

if you could get a dell motherboard yes you can do the work yourself it is not difficult replacing a motherboard, there are computer shop that do sell dell equipment, it depends on where you live.

the other replies are know not what they are talking about

In any computer, replacing the motherboard requires a lot of work if you do it yourself, and many parts won't work in a different motherboard. To replace a motherboard, you have to take the whole computer apart, piece by piece. I do not recommend doing this unless you are very good with computers. Even if you can get good new one, things like the graphics card or internet card, etc. may not work in the new motherboard. I would strongly recommend getting a new one if your motherboard is broken.

lots of diffrent brands will work but is hard to replace
first you have to take note of all the jumpers settings ide cables ect
then you have to take EVERYTHING out to take the board out and replace it
then you have to put everything back EXACTLY the way it is
then install it if you have to

so if i were u i would just have a pro do it
