There are 3 ways to get to Monterrey:
1. Houston - Corpus Christi - Laredo - Monterrey: Maybe this is the best way because it resembles more to a straight line. Time should be around 7 hours. Distance approx 700 kms / 430 miles.
2. Houston - San Antonio - Laredo - Monterrey: 8 hours; 850 kms / 530 miles.
3. Houston - Corpus - Brownsville - Mc Allen - Reynosa - Monterrey: 8 hours; 800 kms / 500 miles. (I reckon shorter distance than #2 but less unlikely to speed.)
Either highway from Laredo to Monterrey or from McAllen to Monterrey is toll; if I am not mistaken you have to pay around 200 pesos / 20 USD.

As I recall, we left Houston at 8:00am and arrived in Monterrey about 3:00pm.
