Wow! What memories your questions brings back to me. I'd forgotten all about those days of being a "Patrol Girl" when I was in elementary school. (sixth grade) I really liked helping the children cross the street. I'd put on the hat & orange vest, that said, "School Crossing Guard" & held the "Stop" flag in my hand. Thanks so much for a "walk" down memory lane. :)

Yes, and I would not volunteer again were I a kid...I always drew the farthest corner patrolled...and that was out of our lunch hour time...10 minutes to, and 10 minutes back..then lunch...and my luck has followed my my entire life...I can get in the shortest line at the grocery checkout, but...of course, someone before me has an item that is not marked...I stand and watch all other lines disappear rapidly while I wait (if I implied patiently, I lied), and still stand there while, after finally finding the price, the person THEN opens their purse, spends 5 minutes looking for a CHECK BOOK and writes a check for 4.89 ! for their purchase...the check then must be approved, and they are on their way. I have no idea why everyone in front of me wants to pay with a stupid, tiny check..whatever happend to dead green presidents????? At my age, I no longer jump up and down, curse, get red in the face...I just assume that no matter what line I get into, the ones behind me will have my sympathy!

Yes I was, back in the early 60s. I was always assigned the most remote crossing away from the school. Always had the same little girl to help cross every day. That was it. And a dog would always come out to visit me.

No, but the school I went to picked the baddest boys to patrol. It worked! Once they had some responsibility they turned into decent kids.

Yes, I was. And until your question I had not thought about that in 40+ years. We wore a Sam Brown belt type of rig and had a special cap. When and why I started or quit are lost in the recesses of my mind, but thanks for the memories.
