The front wheels get dirtier because when you stop, the front brakes generate brake dust. The back ones do too, but the front brakes really do most of the work so that is why they get dirtier.

The dirt is mostly brake dust.
There are two reasons why the front wheels are dirtier:
1. The front wheels do more of the braking than the rear wheels (because most cars have more weight on the front than the rear wheels, and because the weight effectively shifts forward under braking) so the front brakes create more dust.
2. Many cars use drum rather than disc brakes at the rear, which tend to contain the dust inside the drum.

Most run-of-the-mill cars have disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear wheels. Hence, the front wheels will pick up the tiny amounts of brake pad 'dust' released every time the brakes are used. The rear drum brakes will also release this dust, but it will tend to be kept within the drum assembly. (NB If you dismantle a drum brake you will find it full of this debris.)
Even when the car has discs all round, the front wheels will still look dirtier because they produce a greater proportion of the braking effect. (I can see my own car through the window as I type this and I see that the the front wheels are dirtier than the rear. It has discs all round!)

Car brakes are usually discs on the front and drums on the rear. The discs and pads generate dust from the pads which get the front wheel dirty.

it's down to the brakes. the front brakes work harder to slow the car, as this is the safest and most efficient way to do so. the dust settles on the wheels, and can dull the paint if not wahsed off, and may eventually turn silver wheels a bronze colour.

Most cars are front wheel drive which have the brakes on them. Then these wheels get covered in break dust. My rear wheels are dirtier as it is rear wheel drive.

this is because your main footbrake is located at the front of your car basically on the front wheels. therefore more brake dust settles on the front wheels.
