Gateway has lousy customer service and too many hardware issues. Unless you want alot of downtime meaning not using your computer I'd go with the HP. However I prefer Dell over both.

Well, our office has used both, so here's my take:
HP is the bigger brand-name (especially after the merger with Compaq) but I find them a bit overpriced, and they come loaded with bloatware (trial versions and demos of software that you didn't ask for, probably don't want, and certainly don't need- which slow down your system) They also have presinstalled "HP update" software that frequently searches for updates online and keeps you informed of HP product offers- no thanks.
I'd take the Gateway if the specs are equivalent. From what I've been able to find on those models it appears the HP comes with 1GB of RAM while the Gateway comes with 2GB? If that's the case, definitely go with the Gateway!!
As a side note, Dell's technical support has gone WAY downhill since they began outsourcing over the past few years. Only their server support remains top-notch.

Easy choice, HP is the top seller of laptops. Gateway down the list as a budget seller.

According to the Consumer Reports magazine (which is the superior consumer product testing organization) Gateway is actually one of the worst brands fro reliability, and has been for several years. I would personally go with a Dell, but with what you have told me, take the HP.

I even have 2 HP Pavilion DV6000s the two working Vista. I equipped them the two on-line from HP in December 2006. i could no longer be happier with the acquisition. i could advise HP. As for the Vista haters- i do no longer understand why. i'm a potential person and that i've got no longer any issues in any respect with it. SP1 is out now too.

HP & Gateway are both VERY respected and trusted companies. I have had very good experiences with both. Pick which ever one that you get the most for your money for. You should be happy with either one. I know that Gateway's customer service is awesome - experience - along with HPs. It's your pick!!
Good luck!

HP. I have an old HP desktop and it still runs like new. They have great consumer support so if you ever need to, you want, but they are there.
