People who call themselves "snipers" and aren't in the military are really just "fags". Don't say 'tacticool' either... Please. I have an AR that I use to hunt with and there's nothing 'tactical' about it. The average civilian doesn't actually buy and AR to use when tracking down a drug cartel or on a mission to rid the world of terrorists. The buy it for 4 possible reasons. To hunt with, to target shoot with, to use in sport shooting competitions or because they are idiots and think that if they own a black gun then ther must be Rambo. To answer your question... Yes, the .308 is an excellent cartridge. The .223 is though too. But you can't really compare the two. Would you use a .308 to hunt prairie dogs? Sure, you could. But it would be pointless. To address your issue with ammo being relatively close... I don't care if it would only save me .50 cents per case of ammo. Times are tough and money is tight. Also, I am an AR nut. When I built my first AR, I really wanted to build a .308 AR-10. However, the stripped lower MSRP was $200 more than the .223 AR-15 stripped lower. All the other parts were also proportionally more expensive too. And, to tell you the truth, I've never shot a wild hog with my .223 that ran any farther than 20 feet. Why? Because I don't rely on a large caliber to kill what I'm hunting. I rely on my abilities as a shooter. Enough said. I'm not knocking the .308 by any means. It's a hoss. But you can't compare the two calibers. They were both designed with two completely different objectives in mind.

Goggy, I don't know where you live, but the Salvation Army stores, St. Vincent DePaul stores are good. Also if you have a Habitat for Humanity store near you you can find some good deals there too as well. And don't forget yard sales.
