Dear Jenn,
I know how you feel, I have had many little critters as pets, and their life spans are so short, it doesn't seem fair.
It is o.k. and normal to grieve! Remember how much you loved your pet, and how happy he was, and what a good life you gave him. He had the best food, and a warm dry cage, and he was loved. He wasn't an ordinary hamster, he was Your hamster! It is perfectly fine to cry and miss your little guy. Do not try to prevent your grief. You miss him and it is natural.
You will always miss him, but it will take about 2 weeks before just thinking about him doesn't make you cry. For now, clean his cage, wash out his water and food dishes, pack away his extra bedding and snacks, and make all this a good-by ceremony, while enjoy a good cry; and tuck everything away from sight for now.
Wait a little bit before getting another pet. This could be two weeks, or two months. The best way to tell if it is time to get a new pet is if you can look at another hamster, and, while you'll still think about your little guy, you'll be able to know you can love another one as it's own self, not as a replacement.
Losing a pet is a really hard thing to do, but it is a part of life. They live such a short time. This will happen many more times in your life, and making a good-by ceremony for them seems to help a lot!
Good Luck,
C

Try and move on with your life. No offense, but it's a hamster.
I wouldn't get another hamster; I've always heard that makes it worse. You could try a different kind of pet for a while, like a goldfish or something. They won't be taking the place of your hamster, just giving you something else to think about.
Do stuff. Enjoy life, remember the good times, and keep going.
Hope this helped.

My hamster Scooter just passed away, and it sure does hurt. He wasn't just a pet, we treated him like family.

You should put it into yourself that all things pass away. So, even your hamsters die, you will learn to accept the way life turns. Everything dies, not everything really lives. It may live long but it will still pass.

.....you can't prevent, but you could get another hamster. Just think of all the good times you had with him.

You can't, every living being dies, sooner or later. You have to accept this as a part of life and not get so upset over it, otherwise you could turn into a basket case.

Get a new one. You'll miss your old hamster, but you'll be focused on taking care of your new one and not focused on the pain of losing the old one.

It's a rodent. Aka vermin. They are a dime a dozen. Flush him and go get a new one.
