It depends. If your company has a termination policy, then there will be specific guidelines on what is required. (Check with HR if there is one).
But if Virginia is a state that has "at will" employment like most states, they can fire you or you can leave at anytime without notice, or for no reason.

what is the capital of "the state of VA beach" i have been to most state capitals and i must have missed this one. of course you can be fired with out being written up. do you any recourse that is the question. if you are union i would talk to my business manager. if not contact your local EEO office.
