Nope, true patriotism is never corny. However, most people claiming to be patriots in the US today think that being a patriot is simply doing whatever your government tells you to do. I disagree - I believe that love of country (not government) and a willingness to speak up when you think the government is wrong are patriotic acts.

Mark Twain said "Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.” I agree.

The problem with this world is that, as people developed they formed, first of all families, then groups, then tribes, then regions until eventually, after thousands of years, countries were formed with definite boundaries. These conglomerations originated as a form of protection, firstly against wild animals and natural hazards, but also for companionship and a sense of belonging. Such relationships were jealously guarded with tribes fighting against each other to protect their possessions and members. Eventually they learned how to co-exist and trade and lived in relative peace. Today we have ridgidly enforced countries with inhabitants of each becoming 'citizens' and identified by the issue of documents, such as passports, to prove which 'country' or 'land' they belong to. Added to this is the problem of religion with many different factions believing in their own 'God'. In the West generally we follow the Christian faith, this being relatively tolerant towards other religions when compared to, say, Islam, which is violently intolerant. However during this divisiveness we are taught from an early age, and so moulded in character and spirit, to support the relative 'country' or 'land' in which we live to the exculsion of all others. Obviously, in a world with peoples as diverse and different as we have, it would be relatively impossible to maintain a 'World Government' to run the planet in a peaceful and fair way. Just imagine the conflict, indignation and reaction when the people of rich areas, like the USA or Europe ,would be asked to share their wealth with those of poorer areas, the ones we term 'Third World'. Sadly greed would prevail and such a fair and equitable system would not work. So, to conclude, you can see that we have a world as it is now, with all it's faults, with every country's leaders trying to convince their inhabitants that theirs is the best place in the world to be and, unfortunately, them accepting such dogmatic teaching as gospel truth. This has been the cause of many wars and conflicts in the past culminating in millions upon millions of deaths. Patriotism is the result of such doctrinal teaching and will never disappear. Make of it what you will.

No, patriotism is not corny.

However, believing that your homeland is the best simply because you were born there can be dangerous. Our country is a wonderful place, and I'm proud of a whole lot our country has done and what it stands for, but it could stand some improvement.

My country right or wrong. If she's right, God bless her. If she's wrong, God help me right her.

Ignorance at it's worst.
It's fine to be proud of your home, but your home might not be any better than anyone elses.
Usually the most patriotic, flag waving Americans have never set foot out of theitr country,

Wanting to protect your homeland from intruders and people who want to kill that is real corny.
