At the end of the day it all comes down to money. America has prided itself in trying to sell much bigger portions for a much higher rate. Basically in America the motto is "The bigger the better". Its not like this at all restaurants of course, but it comes down to money. The bigger the ration the more the restaurants can hike the price. The other part of it is the availability of the food. In other countries, the food might not be readily available and the rations have to be taken into account which means less in terms of what the customer gets.

AMEN, brother (or sister)! I live in America, and I have no trouble believing we're the fattest nation in the world. Plus, you'll see high prices on menus, and about 80% of the time, it's because the portions are astronomical. All I want is enough to almost satisfy my hunger. Being full isn't healthy.

No. As long as you're not a pig and gorge on the whole thing at once, or you're not wasteful and eat a little and throw the rest out. I usually eat a little, then bring the rest home, then I have lunch or dinner the next day!
