according to the story, on two seperate instances there were pilots who were considered "too drunk to fly" yet they still were allowed to take off into orbit.

Now mind you, there is really very little flying when the shuttle is launched. In fact there are a few buttons that are switched during liftoff. And that is it.

So far, the report is vague as to whether the astronauts were
- Pilots or crewmembers
- On the shuttle, Soyuz, or a T38 training flight
- Drunk or hung over

Of course, a hung over passenger on a T38 doesn't make for a sexy enough headline so the media is playing it like pilots were drunk during shuttle launches. More than likely it was a crewmember who was hungover and, since they don't even sit on the same deck as the pilots, they really don't present much of a danger to flight operations.

From the present thoughts my take became no longer that astronauts get under the effect of alcohol whilst flying into area. quite, at a similar time as occurring training exercises, an astronaut or 2 who have been under the effect of alcohol have been allowed to paintings quite of being chastised. An astronaut could in all probability no longer circulate to area under the effect of alcohol simply by an inherent worry of vomiting on themselves / dying from screwing up their interest.

The shuttle operates mainly on computer control, there is little for the astronauts to do except report their status without burping. The window to orbit is too precise to be left to humans anyway, drunk or sober.

They flew drunk according to this report. There is speculation to the authenticity and accuracy of this report right now.
