Comets act like mini planets moving at an accelerated rate. Like earth orbits around the sun so do comets in their own orbitals. This more expedient orbit shows us a direct correlation to the expansion of the rest of the solar system. Asteroids re a completely different story, they are pieces of matter that have broken off and are for the most part without a specific orbit. Asteroid are a useful way to date the solar system though. If we are able to discover its origin.

Well, it has been suggested that Asteroids are the result of various collisions between objects in space. In general they are rocks masses with irregular shapes such as might have been broken off of some larger object. They were also not molten when they broke off of the mother object, or they would have formed into some sort of smooth blob, or sphere.

Comets tend to have predictable orbits and circle around within them.
