People take alcohol/drugs to fulfill the needs and requirements of their minds for freshness, freedom, rest, relaxation, or even to get energetic/ or a high so that they accomplish tasks easily with results.

Personality is the ability of the person within to guide the self in taking decisions for achieving the above ends.

When one bypasses the knowledge of the harm full effects and chooses the powers and abilities of alcohol/drugs to achieve the needs and requirements of the mind of self, without working hard to gain knowledge of alternatives and without working hard to use them instead; then his personality is already distorted; in the sense that it is guiding and driving him wrongly. Such people are bound to suffer very bad; sooner or later.

Alcohol/drugs do not effect the personality of an individual; in fact it is the other way round.

A powerful personality driven with the strengths of a strong character motivates and drives a person to perform wise actions for fulfilling the above mentioned needs and requirements of his mind.

An individual with either a weak personality or a distorted personality; uses the knowledge of sensual pleasures and gains only for driving the self; and in the long run spoils the character of not only his self but also of his family and family members.; for they end up seeking other wrong ways, means, and methods for giving relief to their own respective minds.

Yes it does. If they are addicted and get a fix, it's mainly just to feel normal again. But while they are high on the drug, all they probly think about is a way to get more money to get some more. If the person ends up coming down from the drug and starts going thru withdrawls, then they become cranky, down, and feel like nothing is right. Drugs are nothing but an endless circle. It may seem that the personallity is better if you're the person doing the drugs, but in reallity, it's worse. Drugs take over the mind and make you believe in things that isn't real.

Yes of course! alcohol and drugs affect a person when using them, but being addicted to them changes them in a different way. An addict doesn't care about others as much, their main worry is how/when they're going to get what they want. This doesnt mean that they don't care for others, but it usually means that others no longer comes first. This can cause people to do silly things like stealing off of someone they love.

Persons, addicted to substances, tend to be very egocentric. Servicing their addiction, is first and foremost in their lives. They are not responsive, to the wants and needs of others, their focus is their wants and needs, i.e., they only love themselves. They will exploit you emotionally and economically, in order to full fill their cravings.

Most likely, there were personality issues and character flaws prior to addiction, i.e., issues in their lives that brought them to the substances in the first place. However, addiction over time makes the initial issues worse, and introduces new ones, e.g., addiction, will make a thief out of an honest man.

well yeah, the ego trip that comes from the substance causes an addict to think and act like they have special insight and are not blinded like us, they become controlling, they color everything through eyes looking for the next buzz, seeing how much stash they have left and worrying about reupping..addicts are selfish and consumed with using

POSILUTELY!
ABSITIVELY!
booze kinda screwed up my life.
maybe there was something going on to begin with....
that might have been resolved during maturation process.
Booze/drugs puts maturation on hold.
always had fascination with booze and bars.
sober now....for years....
things going on...
so I agree with your statement ...somewhat.

I don't think it black and white.
It's a "what came first?" thing.

self medicating?
you bet
so that's a clue.
but that kind of insight comes late.
rationalizations are powerful.
