The Gold Spike is a total dump.
You could probably get a room at the El Cortez for a couple dollars more per night.

The Gold Spike, is probably one of the yuckiest hotels in the downtown area! There is a reason its $25 a night. You get what you pay for. But there will be changes soon, it was just bought and the new owners are planning on making it into a boutique style hotel. So the $25 rate will be no longer there at one point in the future. I have been there one time, not to stay but to gamble at the penny slots ( with pennies ) this was years ago and it was a old, musky, smokey, dirty, downtown hotel. I held my purse close, when walking toward the Fremont Street Experience area where it is more of a safe area.

It's just off the downtown. Not very glamorous, certainly not very expensive. If all you need is a place to crash, should be OK. I wouldn't leave valuable lieing around unsecured. It's about 5 miles from the new and glitzy hotel/casinos. It is probably not the safest area of Las Vegas, but there are worse - I don't think it's close to the "hood".

The downtown area in general is not safe and doesn't the $25/night kind of tip you off to what kind of area that is??
Try getting a room at the Wynn for that rate - NOT

the area is safe, its very close to the fremont street experience canopy.
The hotel itself stinks, even for $25 don't bother the gold spike is a s**thole; being nice. Four queens, main street station, el cortez, fremont hotel, fitzgeralds are all close by and much much nicer hotels than the gold spike and only cost approx $10 per night more.

It's not the best area, but the mayor and police have really stepped up security and cleaned up over there so it's not nearly as bad as it was.
I worked right down the street for a years as a petite female at all hours (at the phone company) and never had any problems. And that was before they revitalized the area.
Still, look out for theft from your room/pickpockets. You should be fine.
