I'm British, not American, but I hope you value my opinion too! Italian politics is very interesting. Italy has had very few decent rulers, Garibaldi being the main exception. Italy's history has been rife with hardship - fascist dictators, a defeat in the war, economic hardship, the collapse of empire and civilization, invaders - you name it. But take Switzerland for example, few invaders, been at peace for 400 years, a nice quiet country.
Now look at what each country has produced - Italy, western civilization, fantastic food, brilliant cars, the rennaissance, beautiful art - Switzerland, banks(ok, they're pretty good), clocks and cheese. The Italian people seem to succeed very well despite their rather poor rulers.
Modern Italian politicians are also not too good - wasn't Berlesconi the ONLY Italian premier to serve a full term? Prodi's only been in a few months and already he's in troubled waters. Italian politics is also full of corruption, though thankfully the mafia have less influence than they used to. But it doesn't matter that Italy has awful rulers, you get on fine without them.

I have just read about your President. He seems like a good President and he seems to be very anti-fascists, which means he respects democracy. Italy is doing well right now and Italy is a good ally of the US, so I would have to say Italian politics are decent.
And it also depends on the politician. Not all of them are to be trusted and in America, many politicians are corrupt and greedy. and don't care about this country.

Don't know a lot about it, but it seems there are a plethora of political parties; one of my Italian friends is a card carrying communist party member(lol, watch the Americans cringe in terror)

It depends on the Italian politician! I would never generalize and assume they are all one way or another...instead I would look at them as individuals and see what I thought of their policies and experience.

CORRUPT but probably no more so than ours.
Ours are just more sophisticated and covert while the flamboyant Italians always want to do things in "style".

I have been to Rome, and the police department I noticed doesn't take anything off criminals. I like that. Here in the USA the criminals can get by with murder and the victims treated like the criminals.... ACLU and the Democrats lean towards protecting the guilty and punishing the victims. " YOU HAVE A GREAT POLICE DEPARTMENT..." UNITED STATES IS GOING DOWN THE TUBES WITH THE DEMOCRATS IN THE SENATE AND CONGRESS, THEY ARE DESTROYING MY COUNTRY THAT I LOVE SO MUCH... DEMOCRATS POLITICIANS BRINGING THE COUNTRY DOWN TO THE PITS OF HELL!!
