How do I check/test to see if my wires are ok? I have a multitester and seem to remember that you can test to see if wires are ok by their resistance somehow.

You would want to check for voltage on the wires. Remove the button and measure the voltage on the two wires. Most transformers are either 24V or 48V

You could short the wires together for just a second and see it the door bell rings. That would tell you if the button is good or not.

The wires themselves very seldom have problems. Usually it is a bad connection at the button or a bad button itself. Fordman is correct about checking for voltage at the button. With the button not pushed, 24 volts. With the button pushed, 0 volts.

find where they connect to the transformer....take them off....then connect them together.........now go up to the door bell with tester. test between both wires and see if you get conductivity....if you do both wires are fine....if not....then one is broken or off
