They feel too insecure to be who they really are or they think that they will be socially rejected if they do. Often people like this are bullied or have been bullied in the past so they create an image of themselves that they think other people would accept or like more than the people they really are. This is wrong however many people do it, people should be who they really are whoever they are!
People like bullies or bitchy people are often pretending , its ok to be argumentative or bitchy sometimes but bullying is wrong and nobodys personality is a natural bully.
Its the same with terrorists, they arent naturally evil they have been influenced to be so or they are mentally ill.

When one is not sure of one's own self, one tends to emulate others.

This can be good; this can be bad. Depends on the situation.

Generally, though, it is better to stay with one's own self. Self-belief leads to faith in one's self and, thus, creativity. Creativity is the essence of all things good.

Pretending to be someone else is (usually) like closing your eyes and asking someone else to lead you around.

Exceptions are always there. A child will pretend to be its mother or father. Not a bad thing if the parent(s) is/are worth copying.
