According to current thinking (Big Bang, Relativity, String, etc.), at the "beginning" there was nothing. Then the universe expands, and Space and Time has meaning and existence only within that expanding universe. So,

Space is clearly not "nothing". What is it?

Space it not "nothing" as it has numerous properties such as a metric with curvature and virtual fields. In modern physics, however, it is considered the elementary backdrop in which events occur, so there is nothing more basic left to describe it. In string theory, its topology is quite complex at the Planck scale, but still an elementary concept. Elementary objects in physics are defined by their properties and have no subcontinents that they are at least known to be "made of". An analogy would be a finely textured canvas (space) of unknown origin upon which paint (matter) is applied.

Einstein is his Leipsig University lecture,in 1920, discused the substance of space and indicated that substance is under pressure an on the total area of the universe exists a total force which he alluded as the force existing in the Aether.
Today the Aether has changed nonmenclature is is now called dark matter. The secret of the Aether force he alluded to is locked in his cosmological Constant.
Neverthe less, except for Our Creator of the Universe who constructed both space and mass,no Human at present really knows what that substance of space is made of.

There is a semantic problem with the meaning of "nothing". With respect to space, "nothing" means that there isn't anything detectable or measurable present, except for virtual particles which have a brief existence and then disappear again. With respect to the universe before the big bang, "nothing" means that there is simply no physical existence.

space as we understand it seems to be "empty" but there are various schools of thought re space. the ancient wisdom teachings state that space is not a vacuum but is the fullness of time itself and can be discerned as such only by a master of the said wisdom, wee folks can only see the one seventh that is displayed as "heavy matter", the known physical plane in that area we call the earth and solar system. In fact the spaces between the "particles of space" are in fact called LOVE.

That is a really stupid question... that idiotic Bible is NOT the final word on the universe.

The reason it's ccalled SPACE is it is EMPTY.
