it just started last night. i was driving and i hit the brakes and it started squeeling. it'll stop on its own sometimes or i'll just turn off the a/c. it's a 96' jeep grand cherokee limited. i first thought it was the brakes but you can't really hear it outside the car. and it won't do it with the a/c turned off. i had the a/c recharged 2 months ago. would this be something i can fix or what. please help. thanx. it also does it on all various controls of the temp, like defrost, head and feet, feet only, head only, recirc, all of them

Your blower motor is starting to go bad. This drives the air through your HVAC system for all the fan settings. This is a squirrel-cage type fan with 2 bearings. When a bearing starts to go, it will be intermittent with that squealing sound you hear (and no, it's not a loose belt). Happened to me - fan would be quiet at first but when I turned a corner or accelerated fast, the gyroscopic inertia of the fan would rub the bad bearing the wrong way. The sound will worsen, become a grating, rumbling sound, the flow rate of air will drop and then it will quit entirely. It could take weeks or month to stop working. Don't run the A/C when this happens - the refrigerant won't evaporate and could reach the compressor as a liquid - not good!

On a 96 GC I think you can get to the blower from underneath the dash. Maybe from under the hood, on the firewall high passenger side. I've never worked on one. If you are a DIY type person, ask another question on how to replace the blower for your vehicle. Good Luck!

This is a common problem and I was going to skip it when I saw 6 answers - couldn't believe no one knew it was the blower!

Sounds like a bearing in your condenser. But try some belt dressing to see if that makes it stop.Tryturning everything off in your car and then turn the ac on.It might be your alternator and the ac is drawing too much from it

Without hearing the sound, I would think it is either the AC compressor having a problem or there is a problem with the blend door maybe having a vacuum leak.
When you shut off the AC it would turn off the compressor and would stop the vacuum to the blend door too.

good luck.

It sounds like your heater core. That is located on the passenger side and there are two hoses that come with and and either one may be loose. It looks like a tiny radiator. When there is a leak, it will drip into the passenger compartment and it will smell like syrup.

If not you may have multi-belt system for your accessories and the a/c belt may be faulty.

It's probably the belt that drives your AC or the bearings on the system.

Have you had the belts checked?
That's a common common cause of squealing and an easy fix.

Since you hear the noise only when the ac is on, and since you just serviced it, I would say that your ac system is overcharged.
Good luck!
