Dhoni is a good batsman, but the question asks who is better...so I must say that Shahid Afridi is better.
Afridi is an outstanding fielder and saves a lot of runs in the field. To top it up, he is also a very economical bowler and takes wickets at vital times, especially to break partnerships. His bowling has a lot of variation which puzzles batsmen.
If we talk about his batting ability, we dont have to say much as everybody knows what he is capable of. When ever he comes out to bat, the other side comes under pressure. The other captain makes changes and there is a panic in their camp. He can single handedly change the whole scenerio of the game. A negative aspect of his batting is that he is irresponsible at times and gets out early.
But that is how he plays. If we check out the stats, we would find out that when ever he fails with the bat, he contributes with the ball......
His playing style is unique and no body can be compared to him.
If one wants to compare Dhoni, then he should be compared with Mark Boucher and NOT Afridi.

To tell you the truth, I have never seen why Pakistan ever included Afridi in the team. He is way too unreliable to be a proper batsman. He is a part time bowler who is not very good at it. He does not keep wickets. Further more, he cannot adopt based on the requirement of the game. He ONLY goes for the shots and gets out recklessly a lot of the times, even when Pakistan has lost early wickets and he really needs to be in the middle, nudge the ball around and rotate the strike. I am not saying that he needs to be great at doing this. Afterall, he is Afridi not Dravid, but he atleast needs to have an understanding that at times when batting is collapsing around him, he needs to cut out his risky shots and just be out there for a couple dozen overs. He has not displayed this understanding of the game.
My understanding of the game is that in order for a player to be included in the team, he needs to be ATLEAST good at one of these three aspects of the game. If Afridi were an Indian or Australian or English or South African, I do not think he could have had such a prolonged career. The selection board of these countries would have dropped him. Sehwag got dropped from Indian team and he has a better avg than Afridi in both forms of the game.
Dhoni is currently in early stage of his career compared to Afridi. But from what I have seen thus far, I would pick Dhoni. Slowly and steadily, he is learning to adapt with the game. He has shown his ability to work with the lower order. He at times, when early wickets are lost, has cut out his shots and instead rotated strike and used his good running between the wickets to put pressure on the fielders. I remember a match against West Indies last year where he made 12 runs in an over and he hit doubles every ball. He could have lofted the ball if he wanted to but he realized that he needed to be there till the end. Finally, his performance in the first test against England really surprised me. I did not think he had it in him to slow down and truly stabilize Indian batting around him but the truth is, India would surely have lost the first test against England without his controlled effort. I would like to see how he develops in the future, but as of now, in Dhoni vs Afridi, my vote is for Dhoni.

I think now it's M.S. Dhoni who is playing some very much needed responsible inning for Indian cricket team. So i think it' only and Only M.S. Dhoni. No comparison between Shahid Afridi and Dhoni. Afridi is like hitter if he gets going then he is the hero on any given day, he plays his short without considering in what situation his team in but Dhoni Played according to situation.

The only thing common to them is big hitting.
Though Afridi has reached higher peaks over a long period Dhoni is more consistent, dependable and better.

Dhoni is better than Afridi. Dhoni plays according to the situation. He can score runs quickly when he wants and he can also stay at the pitch for a long time. Afridi only tries to hit the ball out of the park.

Afridi is on top and he has shown what he can do. Dhoni has
excelled only in few games, but over time he may come close
to Afridi....that is a long shot.
