Rats are so successful because they are opportunistic and eat just about anything. They eat animal and vegetable matter and clean up dead and dying animals as well as all sorts of rubbish that humans produce and leave around. They do well on dry land as well as in wet areas and are excellent swimmers. Rats have a rapid breeding cycle and are thoroughly successful, taking advantage of many environments.
You could argue that they are of use to mankind because they eat all kinds of debris that we leave, but they are not there for our benefit; they co-exist with us and do well because we are wasteful and untidy. It's true that they can carry disease either directly in urine for example or indirectly by means of fleas etc.
They are part of the food web and may be eaten by predators such as foxes or birds of prey. I understand that rats are also used as human food by some societies.

Rats take advantage of whatever food source is available. Know as generalist on the food chain. They will consume anything. This is the major reason rats continue to be so very successful.
Rats are the prey item for just about any predator larger than it. Humans included. In New York City falcons, hawks and owls have been successfully established in part due to the number of rats available as prey.

Animals are not here to benefit mankind. Rats are opportunists, they just take advantage of the mess that humans create. It's humans who don't seem to play a part in the eco system!

They don't benefit mankind, but they do benefit the ecosystem. They feed countless predators, including the small cats, snakes, birds of prey, etc.
The "problem" with rats is that they are so adaptable, and are like the cockroach of mammals, eating almost anything (especially vegetation). That is why farmers value snakes highly.

Had to give you a star for that one. I remember about 10 years ago (I live in Philadelphia), it was around the 4th of July and one concern was the rat population. So city official decided to set out poison and traps to kill them and YET, I could not believe people ACTUALLY protested that it was very inhumane. I thought WTF! Rats are very destructive and spread disease and are gross altogether. Who cares if they were wiped off planet and throw in those pesky, disgusting mice too.
Can't wait to find out if there even is an answer to your question.

Like a lot of animals, they don't actually benefit mankind.
They do scavenge though, and they do provide food for predators.
