Wide screen monitors are nice, but you while you still have the same amount of screen surface. You lose height to gain the width.

Pro:
Great for watching widescreen movies
Good for games that support widewcreen (see more to the sides)
Great for computer desks that have shelves overhead that would limit height of monitors

Con:
Since most windows are vertical, you'll be scrolling more then normal.
Need more space width-wise on your desk

A good way to check what size of monitor you want (or need), is to measure the height of the screen area, and determine if you want wide screen or not.

I got my 19 LCD (non-widescreen) for $75 less then a 19 Wide, and prefer having a more square screen (great for dual monitors).

Speaking as the owner of a 20" Dell 1680 X 1050 monitor:

Pros:

It's bigger than your crappy 15in monitor. Your eyes will thank you for it.

Widescreen aspect ratios fit widescreen content (ie. movies) better. Most widescreen monitors have a ratio of 16:10 versus 4:3 for standard monitors, widescreen video has a ratio of 16:9.

Widescreens look nice.

Widescreens are as cheap as normal monitors these days.

Cons:

You need a graphics card that can drive the resolution of the monitor - shouldn't be a problem with newer cards, but check anyway.

Other screens feel too small after using the wide screen for a while.

Many games don't natively support widescreen resolutions. Less of a problem with newer games, but it can be annoying.

A wide screen monitor is bigger, and also, good for those wides creen movies. In gaming, you have a wider view and whatnot."
So far the only con I have, is having to move the mouse a couple of times to get to the other side, ha ha.

Only pro is that it is good for movies. As far as games, many games do not support widescreen resolutions. If you force it you will end up stretching the screen horizonally distorting everything in game. It really just ends up being wasted space when it comes to anything else besides movies.

There are no cons. Light instead of 40 pounds. Uses less energy. Games look better.

Once you go wide you never go back.
