The Boomtown Rats' classic song summed up what we all feel: "Tell me why I don't like Mondays." Whether you call it the blues or the blahs, for everyone who works the typical Monday through Friday schedule, Monday is always the worst, and Monday morning is the worst part of Monday. We dread it, we fear it, and we hate it. The question we face is what to do about it.

Many people would give the normal pep talk about getting a good breakfast, exercising, leaving early to avoid traffic, and, God help us, working on a more positive attitude about our jobs. My attitude is that if I liked it, they wouldn't pay me to do it. So rather than some pie-in-the-sky pep talk, here are a few unconventional ideas for beating the Monday morning blues:

1. Skip work every Monday. Admittedly, this is the most extreme anti-Monday blues measure, but it has the advantage of allowing you to avoid the Monday morning blues altogether, at least until you get fired. At that point Monday morning will be no more depressing than any other day, and the playing field will be level.

2. Stay up all night Sunday night. Never going to bed will allow you treat Monday morning as a continuation of Sunday night. Rent several action movies and drink copious amounts of coffee, but whatever you do, don't go to sleep. If you are one of those types who actually need sleep, this method could lead to sleeping on the job by noon on Monday. If your snoozing is discovered, however, it could eventually lead to unemployment. For the likely outcome of this, see #1 above.

3. Convince your employer to allow you to work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule. This is little more than rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, but there would be no more of the Monday blues. Which leads us to the final strategy.

4. Come to grips with the fact that Tuesday through Friday will be just as bad. Ultimately, is Tuesday morning really any better than Monday? Putting Monday morning in its proper context will help lessen the sting, while no longer cheating the rest of the days of the workweek out of their rightful depressing place.
