I recently found out that our wonderful babysitter has been an orphan since she was 14 years old. She has been out of the system and supporting herself since she was 18. She has a car, an apartment, and is attending the local community college but she is struggling to make ends meet. Are there any government programs? Are there any foundations? Scholarship programs? etc.... My husband and I have offered to take her in but she is an adult and wants to remain independent. Any ideas?
Thank you so much!!!!

Please stop telling me to pay her more, we already pay her very well but that will not help in the long run. As much as I would love to, we certainly cannot afford to pay for her to go to college.

check out www.grants.gov

and look for local grants workshops. there's all types of money out there that the government literally gives away. there's grants where all you need is to be a women who can't quite afford her bills and they'll give you so much money to pay your bills for so many months.
there are grants to go to college.
grants to pay bills in college.
grants for down payments on houses.
grants to travel.
grants to start a business.
grants for a car.
grants for grad school.

also... suggest to her to sign up for fastweb.com
they have tons and tons and tons of scholarships with deadlines throughout the year. some are only for $1000 and some are for full rides...

Sounds like she is doing pretty well and will become very successful. I hope she is taking advantage of the Pell grant and also financial aid and student loans. And ditto on the no interest loan idea that Beau R suggested. Keep her working for you as well. Any encouragement you can give her will help.

I don't know your area but I would call the school and ask them about loans they offer and call your local DHHR to see what a woman of that age going to school could qualify for. If she refuse help there isn't much you can do but you can check into options for her that she may not be aware of. She may be able to get food stamps or help with her rent if she is very independent she will probably not be willing to receive a check but the food stamps and HUD could help her tremendously.

Check out the Internet sites. There is a wealth of good information out there. Good Luck. Hope you can help her. She sounds like she is trying to do the best she can, with what she has . I give her a lot of credit. God willing this girl can find a break .

Offer her a no interest loan, to help with college. She sounds like she will do well as she is earning her way.

how about a simplier solution. buy her a bag of groceries every now and then or maybe get her a gift card so she can do her own shopping. believe me, this will be a big help.
