BMWs have auto/express/one-touch UP and DOWN on ALL windows. Nissans only have auto-down and typically only on the driver window (tho he is right... you should probably read the manual).
The switches, if working correctly... are 2-stage buttons. Depending on the button style of a '99 (sorry I don't remember), you will pull UP on the lever... then pull up just a little more (you should feel a separate click).... then just let go. The other style is you push the up arrow in... but same thing... put it down one click... then down the 2nd click and let go...
Down is the opposite instructions. Push the down arrow or push the lever in/down. Again... 2 positions.
Auto down only when key is in the Acc or On positions. Auto up with key removed, only if you haven't opened the door yet. Will not work if door is open.
If it isn't working your switch is defective. Try trouble shooting it by trying each individual door switch. If they start to move but then stop and retract a few inches, there is either too much friction or the anti-pinch sensor is malfunctioning (window thinks there is something in the way... like a hand or fingers).
Also try using the key in the driver door lock. Turn to unlock and HOLD it there... the windows should all open. Turn to the lock position and hold it there... the windows should all close. If these don't work, something is likely wrong with your window control module.

Additional Info from E39 Owners Manual: (anti-pinch is done with sensors - my M3 and X5 have express up, as does my brother's 528i).
Open and close windows
In ignition key position 1 or 2:
> Depress the rocker switch until you feel resistance:
The window continues moving for as long as you maintain pressure on the switch
> Press the rocker switch beyond the resistance point:
The window moves automatically.
Press the switch a second time to stop the window.
After the ignition has been switched off:
> You can still operate the windows as long as neither of the front doors has been opened. To open the window, press the switch beyond the resistance point.
Safety feature
A contact strip is integrated into the inner side of each of the upper window frame sections. If pressure is exerted against this contact strip while a window is being raised, the system will respond by stopping the window and then retracting it a small distance. (the auto-up command is "canceled")
....
You can override this safety feature by pressing the switch beyond the resistance point and holding it. (this overrides the "cancel" command to the window control module)

Express down only I think. If the window switch is working properly. Push and hold 1/2 second release. Break out the owners hand book carefull paper cuts? Being the second most expensive thing people own they almost never read there owners book and learn the fratures and how they work. Spend two hours Sunday or today with that booklet and learn how your car works

WRONG and WRONG... geez.... express down on all windows, express up only on the front. Prevents you from rolling up yours kids arms in the window.
You have to learn "the touch". Takes a while to get the hang of it. It's not even a half second, it's just a fast press release and they'll go down. I can have all my windows going down and sunroof opening withing 2 seconds.
PS... your sunroof also has auto-open.
