I have not flown in a very long time, so the differences at airports has not affected me. But I recently opened a new bank account, and I noticed they are much more cautious about getting proper identification and asking more questions than they used to. And the first time I tried to go to the Social Security office, the metal detector noticed the Swiss Army knife in my purse, and the security guard would have had to confiscate it if I wanted to go into the building. Since I once had a security guard at a county fair give me a hard time about returning my Swiss Army knife once he had confiscated it, I decided not to go in. The next time, I made it a point to leave the knife at home.

So no, it hasn't affected me much. In fact, the Social Security incident may well have been independent of the Homeland Security measures. The lady at the bank actually mentioned the Homeland Security as the reason for their caution and all their questions. Apparently the FBI or somebody is using bank records to trace "suspicious" people.

When ever I drive our company vehicle to the Norfolk Navy base, I have to go through truck control. They look at my ID card, write down the license number and name on the pass and wave me on. However, when I go onto the Navy Shipyard in Portsmouth, I have to open the hood/bonnet, all doors and compartments in the vehicle for inspection.
However, when I'm driving one of our government vehicles, I flash my ID card and am waved through. Even on the small base I work on, now that I'm a familiar sight (biker, with a bright green reflective vest, blue motorcycle), the guards hardly even look at my ID on my arm band, and don't even check my base sticker...wave me on through. But let a strange vehicle they're not familiar with come through and they get the 3rd degree. So it varies from base to base.
I travel for my company from time to time and have learned not to take anything with me on the plane I won't need for the flight. I seldom carry much more than a book to read. Wear socks with no holes in them! he he
With the security systems now in place, I thank each security officer, after I pass, for the job they are doing.
