House Prohibits Construction of NAFTA Superhighway

As part of the 2008 Transportation Appropriations Act which passed the House of Representatives this week, an amendment was included that would prohibit the government from spending funds on a NAFTA Superhighway.

While no NAFTA Superhighway actually exists, or is there any plan to build one according to the federal government, there have been discussions that such a highway is being planned. According to some, the highway would consist of 12 lanes and would run through the U.S. beginning at the Mexican border near Laredo, Texas and travel north to the Canadian border through Duluth, Minn. It would allow containers with goods and products to be shipped from other countries up through Mexico and into the U.S. Not only would it hurt American trade, but such a road would also be a risk to national security.

While there is no specific plan to date, the language in this bill strictly prohibits it from occurring. The bill must now pass the Senate before being signed by the President.

Being here in Texas I know this highway is planned. It has been discussed here in the newspapers and on local talk radio. They are proposing taking peoples land through eminant domain, cutting farmers fields and not giving them a way to get from one side to the other and other high handed ideas. To make matters worse it is to be a toll road. I had not heard that they did not fund the highway. I am very glad to hear that as I, as well as many others, feel it is a very bad idea.

I have read where there is going to be a network of highways across the U.S. and the states will be responsible for building these highways. From the added taxes in my state and some other issues that have come up, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if this isn't true.

Our government does not want a fence. They want Mexico, U.S., and Canada connected and open for commerce.

First of all, Tommy, you should educate yourself before answering a question.

Yes, it's true. I'm a construction engineer and worked for Fluor Corporation for 13 years. Fluor made a bid proposal to build this stupid road in Texas. It was being billed as a Texas road to make it easier for Texans to get around their huge state. Everyone knew better.
We owe our Texan friends a debt of gratitude for stopping this road. They have some pretty strict laws there that protect landowners. Also, they had the courage to stand together against big government.
Texans are very proud of Texas and being a Texan. They can come off as being very arrogant. In this case, I salute them. We all should thank the citizens of Texas for stopping this highway.
