May I suggest that, if you get the chance, you watch the TV programme "Beat the Burglar" it gives me the creeps when you see what burglars do to get in your home and once in there, what they do to get to get stuff out!
In your position, I would go to the nearest Police Station and ask to see the Crime Prevention Officer and book an appointment for a visit. Remember to ask to see their ID when they arrive though.

What you need is a burglar alarm.
There are two ways of going about this.
One is to have one installed by a security firm.
Usually this will be a monitored system and you pay a monthly rental. (Usually £30/40 per month). The advantage of this system is that when the alarm is activated it automatically sends a signal to a receiving station. On confirmation that it is a genuine emergency and not a false alarm, they will immediately alert the police.
They could also install a "bells only" system. You pay a lump sum (say £600-£800), they install the system, and when it goes off it sounds the alarm and hopefully deters any burglars. But you own the system.
Then there are systems on the market that you can install yourself, if you feel you are capable of doing so. Or can get a friend or relative that is good with DIY.
In this case it is probably best to go for the wireless type as it is less involved in installing it.
One of the better ones would be Yale. As in Yale locks.
They have the advantage that if it is activated it can ring one or more prearranged telephone numbers. Then that person is actually able to listen in, and if he/she hears the burglars can either inform the police or take more direct action.
A disadvantage with wireless systems is that the batteries have to be replaced every so often. Usually after 3/4 years.
The cost of such a system would be about £300.
HTH.

Hello fencing is always a good idea and to make it harder to climb over plant thorny brushes next to the fence panels, make sure you have locks on all windows and doors and you can buy a home CCTV camera kit for a few hundred pounds, some alarms are very expensive and most burglars can be in and out of your house before anyone will even notice your alarm going off and if you live in the countryside with few neighbours then you will need to have a direct link alarm system that goes straight to the police station, these are expensive and you have to pay a monthly subscription.
I would put up 6 foot fencing with bird deterrent strips on the top of the fencing, bird deterrent strips are spiky hard plastic
strips a bit like putting broken glass on top of your fence but they are the legal version. plant lots of dense thorny bushes next to the fence and even small dogs make excellent guard dogs, if you still do not feel safe go for the CCTV equipment as you can monitor and record movements with motion cameras. Good luck

Get a burglar alarm with a bright box set where all can see it, but bare in mind, a house is only as secure as the glass in the windows. Sorry but thats life. Buy a shotgun, blast off any heads that shouldn't be there and worry about the law later....

What about a motion sensor light? A fence costs about $13 for 8ft (6ft privacy fence). Do whatever you feel you need to, to feel safer. A heavy, lockable screen door ($250 at Lowe's), deadbolts and window locks. A dog is also a great idea and it definitely doesn't have to be a Rottweiler.

1. build a moderately high fence around it
2. put enough lamp post around it
3. change the door locks every 6 months
4. put a doorbell and a peeping hole on the door.
5. you can connect an electrical alarm in a strategic part of your home
6. have some pets in the house which can detect intruders
7. cellfones and land phones are very vital too

contact a few alarm companies to come out and give you a quote.
some fencing isn't as easy to get over. contact a few fencing/general contractors for quotes and ask to see different kinds of fencing that would be less likely to have ppl jump over.
alarms only protect to a point. if someone wants in your home enough they will ignore the alarm going off to loot your home.
contact your local police- here in delaware the police aren't contractualy obligated to respond to alarms - we do it as a courtesey to the homeowner and alarm company ... your police might have the same policy.
