The life of a sports superstar is worlds away from even the minor leaguers, much less Joe at the tire factory or even Fred the jr. stockbroker...

All of the controversy gives me pause...there's activities that these guys participate in that we have absolutely no clue about here in the real world. We zone in on a couple of positive or negative attributes and magnify them in the public eye...for what???

Where's Mark McGuire?? He is alienated (by his self-imposed reclusivity) from the game he loves...why does this happen? Where's Rafael Palmiero? What did this do to Pete Rose or Shoeless Joe, one of the best players of his era? These guys dance to the tune and try their best in a system built to extract the very best for the paying public...

What do we as fans, as baseball purists, or as the general public ULTIMATELY want? Our money's worth? A good show? Integrity? A dream?

Your apparent own reflection and your question are very eloquently stated, and I do believe that all fans try to make something out of all of this that makes sense. As fans, we all believe that good times are just around the corner, the problem is that none of us know how long the block is. We are all watching history about to be made and many fans will never come to enjoy the moment because of their own self imposed beliefs. We build up our favorite players when they accomplish things we like and tear them down the very next moment because of other things we think we don't like, and it is all part of our human nature. I believe most fans ultimately want all of the things you point out and become very disappointed when they feel shorted on any or all of them. It seems to be a very difficult task for all of us to just enjoy the game, for what it is, and not have too high an expectation for what we would like it to be.

What I would like to see is a game and a season filled with the very essence of what baseball began as. A game, a passion, a way of life, baseball used to be more than a game. But now, in the last few decades, baseball has become only a competition and a race to be the best.

I'm a Yankees fan, but I'm a fan because of their history. All of these people who talk about October being all that matters, and if we don't make it to the Series, then the whole year was wasted, are the people who are ruining the game.

Baseball's about letting go and finding an escape from the driven and competitive strain of the real world. Baseball's supposed to be fun! It's not supposed to be another stressor in our lives.

That's what I want from baseball.
