From the answers thus far, it appears that no one reads anymore. One of the books that will help you is entitled, "Working" by Studs Terkel. A Pulitzer Prize winner. You may want to read "Culture Warrior" by Bill O'Reilly. A bit slanted but of interest. By the way, there is nothing wrong with reading a "slanted" or "biased" book as long as you know they are of that genre. These two should get you started. And by the way, your teacher will be impressed with the titles and authors.

Try Boyz in the Hood. My Juvenile Justice and Criminology prof made us watch it and write about it for our project. It has a LOT of underlying symbols and you can talk a lot about culture lag, shock and status.
Good luck!

a good movie would be "Last Night". Its about what people do during the last 6 hours of Earth's existence. all different types of people from different walks of life. I am not sure of the year but I do remember Sandra Oh was in it. And it was a little bit of a dark comedy. it's still a good sociology movie that's enjoyable even if you don't use it for your report.

'Tobacco Road' by John Steinbeck.
or really heavy duty reading,
'Gulliver's Travels' and that's not a joke. This supposed children's story was really written about the royal court. Full of allegory and symbolism. You will truly exercise your mind if you understand the story and write about it.
