The x16 PCI express slot is currently the fastest graphics card interface. It is intended to replace the slower AGP interface that is still very much alive because motherboard and video card makers continue to support it.
The x1, x4 and x8 PCIe are intended for peripheral devices that utilize slower interfaces like the PCI bus. But many devices have moved to popular interfaces like USB, Firewire and e-SATA. Thus, adoption of PCIe in non-graphics devices has been slow.

On newer laptop computers, ExpressCard slots are the successor to PC Card slots. They use PCI-Express technology, which is much faster for communication than the older PC Card technology.
These slots are used for wifi cards, wireless internet cards (think Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile), USB/1394 adapters, card readers, and eSATA adapters for laptops.

In desktop computers, PCI-Express is sometimes mistakenly referred to as ExpressCard. PCI-Express replaces both AGP and PCI. It's faster, overall.
