to someone you haven't seen for years. I only ask as I'm not sure how they would react if I just turned up (as we didn't part on the best of terms). Does this sound okay, too old-fashioned or am I just a great bit chicken?

Send the handwritten or typed letter first. Just turning up unannounced is NOT a good idea because there may have been "lifestyle changes" in the interim that would make "just turning up" very awkward for one or both of you and further jeopardize the friendship.

Absolutely, there is nothing wrong with writing a letter that is hand written/typed, in fact it is a good thing. As for it sounding old fashioned, not at all, because even doing emails and text messages requires some degree of typing or pushing letters. As for being a bit chicken, not in the least you are doing a commendable thing by writing to them and not just turning up, so go for it and good luck.

Stickman, go ahead and write your letter, it could be the ice breaker you need if you want to be back in touch with this person from your past.

Its never a good idea to go cold calling on people, they may be out. If you parted on uncomfortable terms, it also gives the option for them to not answer your letter if they dont really want to be back in touch.

A letter through the door is wonderful.

Sounds more than ok to me, Stickman. Sounds positively courteous: ideal if you're hoping, as it seems, for some sort of rapprochement.

I hardly write letters at all now, let alone by hand. The few times I do, I've noticed people appreciate the personal touch.

if its for a job application then a typed letter would be better, if it's to a friend then a handwritten letter is more personal, a typed letter is more professional and formal. so yes depending on who you are sending the letter to then it is ok to send one or the other.

Of course its ok- it shows that you still care about people enough to sit down and write properly rather than rattle of something on the computer. I always try to write personal letters by hand on nice note paper- i think there is something wonderful about recieveing a hand written letter.

I'd go with a handwritten note. It's more honest and heartfelt in my opinion. It doesn't seem chicken to me, I think that its sweet and maybe romantic, depending on the circumstance.

Very definitely YES.
However, if you haven't seen the person for years, you may not have his/her current address. Thus, I'd make sure that you put a return address on the envelope, so that nobody has to open it to discover the sender's details.

Handwritten letters are better than anything.
It shows you you actually came into contact with the actual paper.
It shows more compassion then anything.
