In every metro, there are some areas which are not quite safe! But the, in every metro, there are also areas, which are absolutely safe! In general terms, one is advised to avoid the vicinity of Bus Stations, Rail Stations, Parking areas for trucks&lorries plying long distances etc. -- in short, areas where there is floating population, where there is crowding! Not only in India, in every country the world over, there are areas the traveller and the visitor are cautioned about> After saying all this, as one who has visited and stayed in most places around in India, i would like to offer a view that most of our metros are relatively safe! Of course, you have to take some basic precautions like the way you dress, the way you avoid showing off any kind of potential for robbery, molesting etc.! And, you have to keep some reasonable time limits for walking around! And, avoid places which are too crowded, esp. when you are alone! Kolkotta, Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, they are all safe! Recently, there is some alarm in Bengalooru about safety, and also a lesser known emerging metro, Kochi (Kerala)! Most areas in Delhi have always been fairly safe, contrary to what some people think!

Everyone has to watch out for themselves. One cannot relax thinking Ah ! I'm in the safest city.
Trouble can show its ugly head in the safest of cities. The most touted safest cities too have incidents that shake the whole nation.
- Mumbai train rape for example.

Most Safe - Chennai & Hyderabad
Most respect - Kolkata
In Mumbai and Bangalore no one treats Ladies diferently, they are more professional.
Delhi is least safe for any one.

Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune and Bangalore are safe. Delhi isn't even safe for men. :-)
