get a 350. change all the fluids, tranny, rear end. lube the front suspension. flush the heater core. upgrade the AC. flush brake lines. water in the brake fluid will put rust pits in the brake cylinders causing the brakes to fade. drain gas tank and check for rust, flush gas lines. flush radiator, check for leaks. if you decide to use the old engine, change the oil. pull the plugs and squirt a light oil in the cylinders and turn engine by hand to loosen up the engine. new oil filter. crank engine but disconnect the spark plugs so it wont start, you want the new oil to circulate first. good luck

You'll probably need to change the battery, the battery cables, flush the fuel system ( you may get away with just draining the tank and filling with premium. Change the oil, air filter, fuel filter, check ALL rubber pieces for dry rot.

And as for another v-8 you can put in without swapping transmissions.... I'm pretty sure you may have the 700r4 Tranny...and I know for a fact that the GM 6.2 diesel engine mounts up to it...just a thought....you'd be pushing alot of torque.
