Sincere curiosity should never be chastised. Don't feel bad. :)
I think many people gain weight for SO many different reasons. Sometimes, a person's thyroid or diabetic condition may play a role. For others, it's a slow metabolism or a heavy build that runs in the family. For others, it's an eating disorder. Most people do not realize that OVER eating is in the same disorder family as anorexia and bulimia. "Eating disorder" simply means you have a problem with food. Some people are depressed or anxiety ridden, and that helps them gain a lot of weight. For some women, pregnancy and motherhood really puts on the pounds.
No matter what the real reason, people gain weight. I don't think anyone ever "means" to. No one purposely sets out to be fat, right?
As for the actual process of someone gaining 400 pounds, here is an example.
Woman gets pregnant (gains weight). Woman has child and suffers from anxiety and depression (VERY common.) She gains more weight. Woman stays home to take care of baby. Her activity decreases (more weight gain). Now the woman feels so bad about herself that she DOESN'T want to play sports, or even wear a swimsuit. She gets depressed again, and comforts herself with food. She gains more. Now, it's actually HARD to exercise. Walikng up a flight of stairs gets her out of breath. She gains more because she is moving less. Now, she REALLY feels bad about herself. She becomes more inactive. Clinical Depression sets in. More weight gain. Now, this woman is 400 pounds, has an eating disorder, and feels so ugly she cries every night. She feels hopeless.
And that my dear, is how people get to be 400 lbs. The story may change a little, but the premise remains the same. It is a vicious circle...it's like an undertow. People find it VERY hard to break the cycle.
Just remember to try and feel compassion and understanding towards these kind of people. And if you know one, do your best to MOTIVATE them! But, never, ever, judge people on appaerance. Physical appearance is luck. What we are inside, is self-made.
Hope that helps. :)

There are a number of reasons why people let themselves get fat. 1: they just don't care! 2: Depression ! 3: Just sloppy and live on food stamps and off of other people! 4: They may actually have something medically wrong with them such as Thyroid which is in their throat (seriously), and YES, it is treatable, there are meds you can take for it.
Yes, it does slow them down. Their stamina is very low to none. I have a son who is 6'3" and 400#, if not over, maybe by now, a little under. He was diagnosed at an early age with thyroid, only one time did it ever show up, the rest is "EXCUSE". And poor, poor , pitiful me! Not to mention Hand to mouth and when I say hand to mouth, That is exactly what I mean. When I buy a weeks worth of groceries for a family of four (he's 22 and was living with us), And we only have enough to last for two days, It is NOT thyroid.
He is also diabetic bc of his weight, high cholesterol/ triglycerides, heart problems. The obesity and thyroid comes from my side of the family, and I am 5'7" tall, 42 years old next month, and weigh around 155. God help me not to stop caring about myself, because then i will not be able to care about the ones that i Love and need to take care of.

I don't think you asked this question to offend...I think you sincerely would like to understand.
There are many reasons why people get heavier. Here are the reasons I know from personal experience as well as close friends.........
1--because they have been molested and put on weight as a barrier, protection and deterrent from being attractive, so that they won't be molested again.
2--because they are in emotional pain, being treated badly and are stuffing their pain, hurt, disappointment, rage down with food, instead of putting it in it's proper place and/or dealing with it.
3--they like the comfort that food provides
4--they binge eat, because they have an addiction.
5--they just like to eat.
6--they are on medication which causes weight gain.
7--they have starved and also eaten very little and literally have shut down their metabolism.
8--they had parents, family and friends not accept and love them the way they are, so they are acting out of pain, by eating.
9--they have emotional hunger and act it out as a physical hunger.
10--they are trying to fill the emptiness inside of them, but are never able to , because they are not dealing with the core root.
11-it's not what they're eating, it's what;s eating them.
12-they have insulin Resistance, which causes the body to bloat, and take everything which is converted into sugar, and store it immediately as fat, causing them to bloat up 5 times their normal size,
13--they have insulin Resistance, which causes much frustration and pain. Not to mention making it virtually impossible to lose weight. Only gaining is possible.
14--low tyroid, low adrenals=Rpid weight gain.
15- Different issues cause uncontrollable weight gain.
Remember this: Being FAT is the LAST ACCEPTED PREJUDICE int his world! It is wrong to judge some one because they are overweight. It is the one "issue" that is visible to the naked eye............you can be an alcoholic, drug addict, child molester..........WHATEVER your outlet is, and you can HIDE it, but having a struggle with yourself, involving food, is the one addiction that can not be hidden, so it's very difficult to deal with an issue when it's a PUBLIC issue and every one can not only SEE it, but has an opinion about it.
I hope this answers your question and also helps people have some compassion. Unless you've been there, you can not possibly understand the pain involved.

It's easier than you would think. It's like nothing in your life matters anymore, but you still get that good feeling you associate with a certain food or foods. So you eat it to cheer yourself up and feel good, if only briefly. Then you of course do get slower and more tired, but you don't care. You get depressed (or were depressed in the first place - it's a cycle) and turn back to your brief respite from the miseries of the world, sort of like a drug addict, and before you know it you're 240 lbs. Basically people that get that huge are sort of ignoring themselves. Its sounds weird, but I think it is true.

I've asked myself this a few times after watching that Big Medicine show on TLC, and personally I don't get it.
I don't get how people can just let themselves go like that. Don't get me wrong; I absolutely LOVE food, but there's a limit.
I think some blame has to fall to the people who allow the morbidly obese person to continue their behavior. When a person gets to the point that their bedridden, how do they get food? The family members cook for them, and instead of working on getting them back to being healthy, they serve them all of the unhealthy enormous portions the bedridden person can eat.
Many theories are out about it, such as emotional addictions to food and wiring in the head gone wrong. But that makes me wonder--why don't people get addicted to other life sustaining substances such as water or air?...
Beats me.

I think to get seriously morbidly obese is an illness.
They have an addiction to food, eat the wrong food and can't stop eating, they do not have the same 'full feeling' normal-weight people have.
I don't think people actually like to be this way.
They are ill-you should not judge them as im sure its not how
anyone would choose to live.

Sometimes it's a matter of health, something they can't avoid or they can do nothing about.
Diseases and Drugs
Some illnesses may lead to obesity or weight gain. These may include Cushing's disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome. Drugs such as steroids and some antidepressants may also cause weight gain.
A doctor is the best source to tell you whether illnesses, medications, or psychological factors are contributing to weight gain or making weight loss hard.
Science shows that genetics plays a role in obesity. Genes can directly cause obesity in disorders such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome.

I have an illness that requires me to take a lot of steroids and often. It does put weight on me and it is harder yet to take back off. Steroids make my face all 'puffy' looking and then I appear fatter than what I am. Don't assume anything about anyone!

People around them won't help when they lose control.
And if they do try to help, they're just being a bother to the person, and the person feels bad and pushes them away.
