Richardson's novel was the best seller of its time. Interestingly, he reworked the novel for each edition. He even went to far as to form a women's group to advise him on the changes.

Many have pirated Pamela, including John Kelly. The most noted author who parodied Pamela twice was Henry Fielding once anonymously using the same epistolary form in "Shamela," and again with "Joseph Andrews," the story of Pamela's brother.
