Drama, as well as comedy, takes us away from our real world for a little while and puts into a different one. We get to see other people's problems and in most cases, they are worse than ours. We feel better about ourselves after a dramatic play. After I played Willie Loman in Death of a Salesman a couple of years ago several people told me afterwards that they were thinking, "Man, I thought I had it bad...." Drama can also make us take a look at our own lives and really put things in perspective. It makes us think about what we would do if we were in a similar situation. We can take dramatic situations we've seen and apply it to our lives. And to top it all off, it's just plain entertaining. It's fun to watch and it's fun to perform.

They are all guessing. Theatre is one of the three basic human institutions that give us a chance to really live. The other two are Religion and Spectator Sports. The real secret of the importance od theater is best stated in the Preface to Dylan, a play by Sydney Michaels. Which begins, "In the dark of the theatre we remember ourselves...." Find this and read it.

Because we have a basic human instinct to play and watch others play. Drama is a form which allows us to escape into other worlds than our own.
