Do you have any driftwood in your tank? If so, this may be your culprit. Wood leaches tannins, which will turn water a yellowish, or yellowish-brown color depending on how much it is leaching. Tanks with leaching driftwood often look like weak tea. It will also lower the PH of your water, so you should test your water's PH. If you take out the driftwood and boil it for a few hours and it turns the boiling water dark, then your driftwood was not properly cured and is leaching tannin into your tank. To cure such a problem, boil the driftwood for several hours (I boil all my new wood for 8-12 hours with 3-4 water changes) and then soak it overnight in conditioned water before putting it back into the tank. Once the wood is no longer leaching tannins, regular water changes and the filter should be able to clear up the water shortly. You don't want to do it too quickly as you will be raising the PH and you need to do that very gradually or you will give your fish PH shock and they may die.

Sounds like you may need an algae eater or some snails to eat the excess food and algae that may be in your tank. Also, invest in a bottom feeder like a spotted catfish. I'm sorry but I don't know what Yabbies are. Be careful with the snails though! You want to get the correct ones, ask your local pet store which specializes in fish...they should be able to tell you what type of snails to buy.

Do you own or have access to a system one diatom filter! I do and it will remove the minute particles and all of the discolorization from your tank! It uses diatomaceous earth and for the true aquarist it is a must. Good Luck!
