If that's the case, then there is sense in pretending, sometimes you just want others to know that you have tried. How about pretending that you are pretending?

I don't think ther is much sense in pretending anyway. Honesty is easiest as long as you hold your tongue if lacking something nice to say.

That depends.
Your Mum might know by looking at your eyes, but your husband is probably oblivious. Kids might guess, your boss won't know, and the general population won't even care.
If you're worried you can always wear shades.
