Scotts weed and feed, It kills weeds and provides nutrients to the grass to make it greener. All you have to do is spread it and water!! This stuff really works.
FYI most weeds have very long roots that mowing does not cure, it actually spreads due to the seeds being displaced.

Just keep it mowed so they don't go to seed. Most weeds are annuals, and within three years, you should have most of the annual weeds gone (as long as seeds don't drift in from your neighbors, or come in with the organic fertilizer).

For broadleaf weeds, there are special herbicides that target those. I find they don't get the really tough ones -- those probably need dug out -- but they do kill most. If you don't like herbicides, though, mowing makes a reasonably nice lawn.

If your lawn is really bad, though, you might have to start from scratch.
