I noticed that my 6 weeks old baby begins to sleep longer and MAYBE through the night. (I used the word MAYBE because I am worried that she would be hungry in the middle of the night since breastmilk is easy to be digested; so when she grunted, twisted and turned intensely, I would bring her out of her bassinette, while her eyes still closed, and fed her. I will try not to do so tonight. I will let her contiune sleeping to see if she would start sleeping through the night. However, I am concerned and wonder if she would be sleeping with hungry stomach?? (She used to be fed around every 2 or 3 hours at night). I don't feel good if she would close her eyes with hungry stomach. Thanks.

Trust me, you will hear from the baby when she is hungry. Babies do not fall asleep hungry, and they certainly do not stay asleep when they are hungry.

Do not worry, and do not over-feed this baby. You may be doing more harm then good. Just let your baby cry out for you, and then know that this cry is for milk. Soon, you will learn the various cries your baby will have. Some for attention, and others for hunger.

I hope this helps.

At 6 weeks I would continue to wake her for her feedings, even though you might feel like you want to sleep!!! You're right about the breastmilk being digested more quickly, which is why you should let her tell you when she's hungry. You're doing the right thing by reading her signals so early on and not giving her a reason to cry because babies only cry when we don't "get" what they need! Because she is probably only waking to eat at this point keep doing what you're doing and give her what she needs. Babies won't ever sleep through a "hungry stomach". They're smart little guys and will let you know what they want, when they want it!! If they're hungry, they won't be the only ones not getting any sleep during the night!! Good Luck and congratulations!!

6 weeks is very young to expect them to sleep thru the night. You were right in picking up the baby when she started to grunt and stir because she probably would have worked herself up into a cry anyway. They are more capable of sleeping thru the night after they weigh over 12 pounds or around 3 months or older. Don't worry about being in the habit of getting up at night, if she is hungry it isn't a habit, it's a need.

she will let you know if she is hungry!! let her sleep as much as she can at night. she will not sleep if she is too hungry to sleep. You want her to learn how to sleep through the night. She has gotten a little bigger and her body is capable of going for longer periods of time without needing to be fed. That is what you want to happen and that is what's supposed to happen. Feed her during the day when she wants to be fed and feed her at night when she needs to be fed but, don't feed her in the middle of the night unless she needs you to. She will learn to get more of her nutrition during the day and will eventually not need to be fed during the night at all. That is good!! She will not sleep if she is hungry -- don't worry!!

If she is feeding well and regularly throughout the day. then It would be ok for her to sleep through the night. They usually wake up crying if they are hungry. She must be starting to adjust to day and night. For in the womb they have no sense of this. We have to train them to do all the things in the day and sleep at night time.

Do not wake your baby to feed her!! If she is hungry she will wake up and demand food. If she is sleeping through the night she is satisfied and you are doing a fantastic job of settling her into a healthy routine for both of you. Get as much sleep as you can, babies have a funny way of changing their routines when you least expect it...SLEEP!! Congrats...

If she is hungry she will cry. If you feed her in her sleep she is just going to gain weight. That's why babies cry, when they are hungry, poop etc so you will know when she is uncomfortable. Just like adults start whining when they get hungry, think of the same thing for your daughter, if she's fine then she's fine.

Your baby is SMART! If her tummy is empty, she'll wake up and 'ask' to eat. Let her sleep as much as she wants at night, it gets her in the habit of going a longer stretch.

Don't be surprised if she wakes up again at night soon, babies go through growth spurts where they wake up and nurse more. It's a signal for your body to make more milk.

Once again, your baby knows what she's doing. If she wants to sleep, let her, if she wants to eat, let her! You're doing great.

let her sleep. if her eyes are open for a reasonable amount of time then i would say its safe to say shes hungry. i think this is pretty normal for them to sleep longer as time progresses even though they are getting liquids. i felt so blessed one night when my 7 week old slept for 8 hours.

just do what your insticts tell you.
