There are a lot of factors to consider when opening a business, but usually, a franchise will do better. When you open a franchise, you are buying into a company that has already figured out how to run that business. They tell you everything from hiring policies to pricing structures. They also train you on running your business their way. Plus, you get the benefit of their marketing. Thus, franchises generally do better for a new business owner who is inexperienced.

If you have experience running a business, you could be very successful, but you will not be starting with a known name. You are starting from scratch and it can take you years to get the kind of acclaim a franchise may already have. You have to figure out all your own mistakes, but then you also get to make all the rules and you answer to no one as you run the business.

Hope this helps.

it really depends on the type of customers that you are trying to reach. If youve got something good that you think would do well if it was expanded then go for it, but if your success is largely based on the personal attention given to the customers , then its a better idea to stick with the mom and pop shop.

It will also have a lot to do with the size of the city or town you are in. In a smaller town most of the time a mom and pop operation will be a little more hands on and knowing your customers.
