I applied for geological engineering program and i'll start university this coming september. Let;s just say I want to change my major to chemical engineering or some buisness major or even law...is it posssible for me to change my major in my first year of university and would I have to maintain a high GPA and would have to repeat some courses and are there any rules for changing majors? Finally, what if something I'm interested in is not in my university but in some university, would it be possible to transfer and would i have to repeat first year again? I'm not sure if all universities have the same rules in the world but my university is in Canada. Thanks for taking the time to answer all these tedious questions. Thank You :)

Its never too late to make a career change. Nor is learning ever a waste of time. Learn what you can and move on if you feel its necessary.

No offense, make the changes now before you get the degree.

If you can enter a chemical engineering program, then you should do so. The curriculum at most universities is nearly identical for all first (and mostly second year) students. The biggest differentiation happens during the third year of school.

If you repeat some courses (or some courses go to waste) guess what, BIG DEAL - no problem there. Make the mistakes now and critically think about where you would like your career and life to go. Please be happy with the decision.

I used to recruit for summer internships in science and recruited 7th and 8th semester students often. I used to feel so bad when the student made the decision that science wasn't the direction he wanted to go, and the internship pushed him over the edge. After 5 years, I don't feel as bad and realize that the student made the decision (albeit very very late) that his chosen path wasn't correct. College is the way to correct it.

You will not know the correct answer right away - it will come to you.

You should be able to change majors at any time in your college career. However, be aware that some of the courses you take are major specific and will not transfer into other programs. You will only receive elective credits for those classes that do not transfer between programs.

Transferring between Universities is a fairly simple process. You would have to apply to the new university and be accepted...then send an official transcript from your current University to the new school...they will evaluate your transcripts at the new University and let you know exactly what you will need to take to finish your degree.

That's in America...but I think that the processes are fairly similar in Canada.

Hi Imran, I don't see why you can't change your career. It's better to do it now and wait until your half way threw and decide this isn't for you. If you want to transfer to a difference college you need to see about doing that too. Lol
